Frequently Asked Questions

If you plan to hire employees, including yourself, it is essential to register as an employer with HMRC. HMRC’s system for this purpose is known as ‘Pay As You Earn’ (PAYE), which is responsible for collecting Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) from eligible employees.

After you have filled out our online form and we have reviewed and approved it, we will initiate an application to HMRC on your behalf. Once HMRC has successfully registered you as an employer, you will receive a letter by mail containing your PAYE reference.

An employer reference number, also known as an employer PAYE reference or PAYE reference number (ERN), is a distinctive alphanumeric combination assigned to a business when it registers with HMRC as an employer. This reference number is used to identify the employer for income tax and national insurance purposes related to employees.

The employer reference number comprises two components. The first part consists of three digits, which denote the HMRC office number responsible for the company’s PAYE matters (e.g., 135). The second part of the reference, separated by a forward slash, represents the tax office’s specific reference for the employer (e.g., AB56789). For businesses registered as employers prior to 2001, their employer reference number will be in the format 135/A56789. For those registered after that date, it will take the form 135/AB56789.
